FUNDRAISING
COOKIE DOUGH
This year, the RKPC board decided to try a new supplier for the annual Cookie Dough Fundraiser. Dough-to-Go, Inc. is a commercial producer of cookie dough, baked cookies, brownies and scones based in Santa Clara.
Betsy Lee launched Dough-to-Go in 1983 at age 37 with $10,000 in personal savings on the advice of her 12-year-old son. Mother and son rented a kitchen in Hobee's Restaurant in Palo Alto and worked nightly until dawn making chocolate chip dough. Afternoons were devoted to marketing the product to grocery stores and other retailers. Today, the company is one of Silicon Valley’s fastest growing companies.
Kick off assembly: September 9
Sales: September 10– 24
Cookie dough delivered: October 8
ROD’S TROD
The 19th Annual Rod’s Trod is scheduled for Friday, May 29
History of the Annual Rod's Trod
Rod Kelley School held its first Walkathon in 1990 and at that time it was called Rod's Trod for Sod. The primary focus was to raise enough funds to replace the existing mud and dirt of the newly constructed school with a lawn and playing fields. Not only did it turn out to be a substantial fundraiser, it also proved to be a great way to bring us all together as a Rod Kelley Family!
The Trod was so successful that it paid for sod and irrigation system in three years, as well helping in all areas of student enrichment. Today the Trod helps to pay for awards, assemblies, field trips, art programs, books and computers.
Rod's Trod, as it is called now, is a walking event in which students collect pledges and donations for the number of miles walked from their family, friends and neighbors. Incentives are awarded to the walkers and classes with the most laps. There are also prizes for the most pledge money brought in from individual students and classes.
While the emphasis of this event is walking, we make sure that the comfort and safety of our children comes first!! To battle the heat there is a water station for liquid refreshment, spotters who spray you with water, and a handy first aid station for bumps and blisters.
The Trod is a carnival atmosphere for the participants and their families. The day features music, games for walkers, snacks, a silent auction and bake sale! Quite simply, the Rod's Trod is a lot of FUN!
Rod´s Trod 2008
Fifth grader Evan Harris, from Mr. Pope’s class, drew the winning T-shirt design for the 18th Annual event themed “Tour de Trod.” His drawing featured the Eiffel Tour and a boy and girl running around it with the French flag in the background. “I waited three years to do this drawing,” said Evan, who hopes to be a cartoonist or illustrator. The contest is only open to fifth graders.
Also highlighting this year’s Trod was visits from Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (22-1-1, 15 KOs), International Boxing Federation (IBF) two-time Featherweight Champion. The Gilroy native attended a pep rally and the Trod to reinforce his message about living a healthy lifestyle.
