Ballet Folklórico Comes to Rod Kelley
Children Learn Regional Dances and Mexican Culture
Rod Kelley Ballet Folklórico Los Diamantes, for children ages 5 and up, is Gilroy’s newest dance group.
“Learning regional dances is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about Mexican culture and art while having fun and meeting new friends,” said the instructor Leticia Ceja, who has taught Folklórico in the Bay Area for more than 13 years.
The group, while based at Rod Kelley Elementary School at 8755 Kern Ave., is open to all children in South County. The group is sponsored by the Rod Kelley Parent Club.
Folklórico, often known for the dancers’ colorful costumes, is a collective term for traditional Latin American dances that emphasize local folk culture. Each region in Mexico, the Southwestern United States and Central American countries is known for a handful of locally characteristic dances.
Classes are offered in a 12-week session and are Thursdays from 4:30 – 5:30 pm for beginners and 5:30 – 7 pm for intermediates. The cost is $140 per session. Folklórico dance shoes are required. Partial scholarships are available.
